A postal clerk in Indianapolis made a discovery about her
customers and coworkers – and her own nature.
A newspaper editorial charged that her branch had “the
rudest clerks in town.” The clerk was angry.
"I was rude to people because they were rude to me,”
she said. “What goes around comes around.” Then she wondered
what would happen if she treated others with courtesy. Would
that come around too?
So she made an effort to get to know customer’s names. The
clerk began to smile and ask how they were doing. Even a man
known for his grouchiness eventually became a favourite
customer. All the clerks began to make an effort. Everybody
reaped a reward of cheerfulness.
And it all started with one woman who decided that “what goes
around comes around” can be good news.

It has taken me many years to learn a simple lesson. There are
very few things in life that we are able to directly change.
We cannot change our colleagues, the government, the weather or
our customers. We cannot change our spouses or our children.
If we wish to change any of those things we must begin by
changing ourselves.
If you work in any organisation there are probably coworkers
who you do not get along with as well as you might. No doubt
they annoy and irritate you. But have you stopped to consider
what might happen if you treated them differently? Would they
react to you differently and become less annoying and nicer
people? Perhaps it is worth a try, just do not expect immediate
results.
Often it is easy to blame someone else for a situation when we
are equally to blame ourselves. Even if a situation is not our
"fault" it is still probably worth changing our own behaviour
towards someone else if that will produce an effect that we
want. Even if the change just leaves us feeling better within
ourselves knowing that we have done whatever we were able to do
to change things.
How do you treat your customers? When was the last time that you
sent them a simple note to say “Thank you for your custom and
support”, have you ever sent such a note? How would you feel
towards a supplier who sent you such a letter?
When was the last time you asked your customers if there was
anything that you could do for them? I do not mean as a veiled
message which really means “is there anything else we can sell you.”
Simply and genuinely ask if there is anything you can do for them
without expecting anything in return.
Will some people take advantage? Probably but I am afraid that is
just life. Those people were always going to take advantage in some
way. What is important is the goodwill you generate among the
majority of your customers. If your customers feel that you care
about them they are far less likely to change supplier and it will
always be cheaper to keep existing customers than to find new ones.
Why not just try the idea out with a few of your best customers
and see what happens?

The Daffodil Principle

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, "Mother, you
must come see the daffodils before they are over." I wanted to go,
but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead.
"I will come next Tuesday," I promised, a little reluctantly, on
her third call. Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had
promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into
Carolyn's house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said,
"Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in the
clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and
these children that I want to see badly enough to drive another
inch!"
My daughter smiled calmly and said, "We drive in this all the
time, Mother." "Well, you won't get me back on the road until it
clears, and then I'm heading for home!" I assured her. I was
hoping you'd take me over to the garage to pick up my car."
"How far will we have to drive?" "Just a few blocks," Carolyn said.
"I'll drive. I'm used to this."
After several minutes, I had to ask, "Where are we going? "This
isn't the way to the garage!" "We're going to my garage the long
way," Carolyn smiled, "by way of the daffodils."
"Carolyn," I said sternly, "please turn around." "It's all right,
Mother, I promise. You will never forgive yourself if you miss
this experience." After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a

Timely help for quilt supplies
About Quilting I like this scrappy miniature quilt. It's made from sixteen 3" foundation (paper) pieced whirlwind blocks and finishes at 21" square. The blocks are quick and easy to make, but you might have to experiment a bit with patch placement (for the neutral background) because triangles can be a little challenging at first if the technique is new to you. I get lots of emails from quilters who've never tried foundation piecing, and always encourage them to experiment with it -- most people love the technique once they've tried a few quilts. And after you've made a couple of foundation pieced projects, you'll know instinctively how to make them all. Newcomers to foundation piecing should read my Foundation Piecings Basics and Paper Piecing Tips before sewing the quilt. If you answered yes, a string quilt might be a perfect next project for you. To make a string quilt, strips are sewn freehand-style onto foundations. You don't have to fuss over strip width, seam allowances or worry that strips don't "match." You can configure the strips in any way -- make square blocks or cut pieces into other patchwork shapes. If you don't have leftover fabric, no problem, lots of quilters cut new yardage into strings just so they can make one of these lovely quilts. It's difficult to see the design as a small thumbnail, plus I've included two very different color and color value arrangements within the pattern, and don't have room to display both. Milky Way is one of many quilt blocks based on the traditional Friendship Star design, but Milky Way's unique alternating stars won't emerge when blocks are simply sewn side-by-side. The method used to make them appear is easy though, and it's simple to create all sorts of layouts, from subtle to dramatic. Permalink | Comment | Email this Aurora Borealis Quilt Block and Quilt Pattern I've only seen the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) once, from an open field in Iowa. They were beautiful, but had I not known what I was looking at, the constant bends and flashes of color that crossed the night sky would likely have been a frightening experience. I hope to witness the lights again sometime, but it won't happen in my southern state. I wanted the Aurora Borealis quilt to resemble those flashes of light against a night sky. The quilt is created by surrounding color-intense stars (a Friendship Star variation) with a mottled, multicolored fabric backed in black. A plain black background is added next, to make the colorful components stand out. Permalink | Comment | Email this Ocean Waves Quilt Pattern Ocean Waves is a design that's packed with half square triangle units. The quilt isn't difficult to make, but it does have lots and lots of pieces. I'm only showing the block here, because scaling the quilt down to a size that fits the space makes it pretty much unrecognizable. The pattern is a natural for scrap piecing, but looks great sewn in an orderly fashion, too. If the number of patches the quilt requires seems like more than you want to take on, just assemble a small batch of the units each time you sit down to sew. Accumulate them in a box, keeping track of how many you add each time, and for a true scrap quilt sew the units with fabrics from the day's sewing tasks.
